O2 Newcastle Turns Ten
6th November 2015
The Newcastle O2 Academy threw the best 10th birthday party we have ever been to. The amazing celebrations featured a marathon of 10 of the North East best bands, headlined by Little Comets, and including our pals Shields and Dalaro. We were only disappointed we didn’t get to see the full sets of all the bands, although all the exercise from running up and down the stairs was probably good for us!
Hazels, an indie five piece from Durham, and Purple Radio favourites Dalaro opened the show as winners of the unsigned band competition in the run up to the event. You can thank us later Dalaro!
The charming Tessera Skies, the next ones to play, and launching their new single "Such Great Heights (Raindrops)" (http://smarturl.it/SGH-iTunes), played in the Academy room 2 and stood out as the ones to be following in the coming months.
A gift after the other: the evening continued with Shields down on the main stage. We are not ashamed to say that we were big fans already, having heard them for the first time in our very own Purple Studio during a Saturday Live Session back in May. Anyway, after a busy summer playing at Glastonbury, the guys returned to the North East for an insanely good set. Literally, if you haven’t heard their stuff, youtube it this second https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eooLEk_owXI . Their album is set for release in February. Watch this space.
Running back upstairs we caught Street Party in Soho, who played in front of a packed crowd, before heading back to see DU Blonde on the main stage, whose vocals sounded immense. The crowd clearly enjoyed the performance from Cape Cub and Hyde and Beast and Kosoti’s folk-pop-rock was well received upstairs. Why not check out their single in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust? http://www.kosoti.com/supportbyyourside.html
After all that, even we were surprised we had energy left for the headliners, Little Comets. Their hour-long set included many favourites as well as new songs from their third album, the 2015 "Hope Is Just A State Of Mind."
We had a great evening and can't wait to hear more from these local bands. Thanks to the o2 Academy Newcastle for such an amazing celebration. Happy 10th Birthday! We look forward to the next 10…
