Purple Radio is a Registered Media Organisation and a Registered Student Radio Station with Durham Students' Union and the Student Radio Assoication respectively. Founded in 2005, Purple is based in Dunelm House and is the offical radio station for the University of Durham. Along with Palatinate and Durham21, we provide free and independent broadcast outlets for all students at the university. The output of the station is regulated by Ofcom and the elected Station Manager and Programme Controller, to ensure all output is appropriate our target audience. We provide a range of shows to cater for all audiences, including entertainment, commedy, talk shows and specialist music programming. A Little HistoryPurple Radio had existed in Van Mildert College for a number years, until 2004 when it was moved to Dunelm House, making it more accessible to all students at the university. The decision was taken to covert the station to internet broadcasting, thus allowing broadcasts to me made all year round and remove our dependency on four week Restrictive Service Licenses. Our first internet broadcast took place at the beginning of Epiphany Term 2005 but due to snow storms, the station was taken off air for another year and launched again in Epiphany Term 2006. Since then, the station has broadcasted through all the terms successfully and has participted in the first Student Radio Chart Show run and undertaken two 24 hour extravagnzas to raise money for local causes. See our Wikipedia entry if you want to know more about the past of Purple Why 'Purple Radio'?Orginally, our station was called Purple FM 107 until 2005 when the transition was made to internet broadcasting. FM 107 were chosen simply because this was the broadcast medium used. When we moved to Dunelm House, Purple Radio made much more sense. Palatinate is the offical colour of the university (#682860 for those interested!) so being the offical radio station, Purple Radio made sense. Offical Aims of Purple Radio
