President’s Column: Durham SU President welcomes Freshers to Durham

The following is an article provided by Palatinate.

It’s with great excitement and anticipation for the year ahead that we welcome you to Durham University. We’d also, of course, like to warmly welcome back our returning students, who have started to arrive back into Durham and Stockton ready for the new term.

I’m Millie and I’m the President of Durham Students’ Union. I work with a team of four other student officers and we are elected by the students of Durham University to work full-time in the Students’ Union on issues that affect you. We want to hear from you about what would enhance your University. We are a student-led organisation so if there’s something you would like us to work on, just let us know! As well as working to make positive changes, there’s also a lot going on with our student groups for you to get involved with, and we work closely with student leaders across the university to help develop skills, to ensure you can get the most out of your time at university.

You can get involved straight away by becoming a course representative. As a course rep you’ll be the person on the ground finding out everything good and bad that your course mates are experiencing from an academic point of view. You can then share best practice and work with your fellow course reps and your academic departments to improve and change any of the negative aspects. Find out more about this and sign up today on our website (www.durhamsu.com).

As a new academic year begins, whether you are a new student or a returner, this is your chance to try something different and meet new people. You have so many opportunities ahead of you in your course, your college, in the Union and in Durham and Stockton. I’d encourage you to really embrace this opportunity and try something new. The officers and I will be in bright orange t-shirts throughout Freshers’ week – if you see us, make sure you say hello!
